In conclusion, sketchbooks (or preliminary sketches) are very useful and important to any illustrator. Not only are they the key to pretty much every artwork, but they also hold a lot of personality, potential and originality. Most of the things you see around you would have started from a sketch - it’s the first step to any design or illustration. Sketchbooks help you improve, through regular practice and lack of boundaries when it comes to materials and processes (Milan Art Institute, 2020).

On top of that, they are very ethical and do not cost a lot of money (most of the time). Overall, I’d say that sketchbooks are pretty cool.
